In Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Abilities were added. These abilities are automatically used by the Pokémon and can't be controlled. Some Pokémon have two possible abilities, but no Pokémon has two abilities at one time. (This is different in Mysterious Dungeon games.) The following is a list of the abilities in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and a description of their effects.
Beginning in Emerald version, some abilities were given special effects outside of battle. Those effects are written in italics underneath the dashed line.
Air Lock | Prevents Pokémon from being affected by weather in battle |

Arena Trap | Prevents foe from switching; doesn't work on Flying types and Pokémon with Levitate Makes wild Pokémon more common |
Battle Armor | Helps Pokémon avoid critical hits |
Blaze | Multiplies power of Pokémon's Fire attacks when it has less than 1/3 its maximum HP |
Cacophony | Guards Pokémon against sound based moves; only obtainable by cheats or glitches |
Chlorophyll | Doubles a Pokémon's speed in strong sunlight |
Clear Body | Prevents an opponent's moves from lowering stats |
Cloud Nine | Prevents weather influence on all Pokémon in battle |
Color Change | Changes Pokémon's type to match type of the move it was hit with |
Compound Eyes | Increases accuracy 30% Makes wild Pokémon holding items more common |
Cute Charm | Attracts opponent Pokémon 30% of the time when hit with a physical move Makes wild Pokémon of the opposite gender more common |
Damp | Prevents all Pokémon from using Explosion and Selfdestruct |
Drizzle | Changes weather to rain during battle |
Drought | Changes weather to strong sunlight during battle |
Early Bird | Causes Pokémon to wake earlier from sleep |
Effect Spore | Afflicts opponent with either Poison, Paralysis, or Sleep 10% of the time when hit with a physical attack |
Flame Body | Afflicts Pokémon with a Burn 30% of the time it is hit physically Cuts the number of steps to hatch an Egg in half |
Flash Fire | Prevents damage from Fire type attacks and increases power of Fire type attacks |
Forecast | Changes Pokémon to a type and form connected to the weather |
Guts | Multiplies power of Pokémon's attacks by 1.5 when it has a status condition |
Huge Power | Increases power of Pokémon's attacks, but effect reduced by half when ability is changed |
Hustle | Multiplies power of Pokémon's attacks by 1.5, but accuracy is reduced to 80% Makes high level wild Pokémon more common |
Hyper Cutter | Prevents effects that reduce attack Makes the radius of the HM Move Cut wider |
Illuminate | Increases chances of meeting wild Pokémon when the Pokémon is in the lead position |
Immunity | Prevents Pokémon from being poisoned |
Inner Focus | Prevents Pokémon from flinching |
Insomnia | Prevents Pokémon from falling asleep |
Intimidate | Reduces opponent's attack, {Make low level wild Pokémon less common} |
Keen Eye | Protects Pokémon from accuracy reduction Makes low level wild Pokémon less common |
Levitate | Prevents Pokémon from being hit with Ground type attacks |
Lightning Rod | Draws Electric attacks away from partner in double battles Increases the number of calls received on the Match Call |
Liquid Ooze | Causes damage when Pokémon absorbs its HP |
Magma Armor | Prevents Pokémon from being frozen Cuts the number of steps to hatch an Egg in half |
Magnet Pull | Prevents Steel type Pokémon from escaping Makes wild Steel type Pokémon more common |
Marvel Scale | Multiplies defense by 1.5 when it has a status condition |
Minus | Multiplies special attack by 1.5 when positively charged Pokémon is also in battle |
Natural Cure | Cures a Pokémon's status condition when it is withdrawn from battle |
Oblivious | Prevents Pokémon from being attracted |
Overgrow | Multiplies power of Grass type attacks by 1.5 when it has less than one third of its total HP remaining |
Own Tempo | Prevents Pokémon from becoming confused |
Pick Up | Picks up items in battle |
Plus | Multiplies special attack by 1.5 when negatively charged Pokémon is also in battle |
Poison Point | Poisons opponent Pokémon 30% of the time when it is attacked directly |
Pressure | Reduces opponent's PP by two every time it damages Pokémon Makes wild Pokémon more common |
Pure Power | Increases power of Pokémon's attacks, but the effect is reduced by half when the ability is changed |
Rain Dish | Recovers HP in every turn when it is raining in battle |
Rock Head | Prevents Pokémon from receiving damage when it uses Submission, Take Down, or Double-Edge |
Rough Skin | Causes opponent's HP to decrease when opponent attacks Pokémon directly |
Run Away | Allows Pokémon to escape from wild Pokémon |
Sand Stream | Summons a sandstorm during battle |
Sand Veil | Allows Pokémon to evade moves more easily during sandstorms Makes wild Pokémon less common in sandstorms |
Shadow Tag | Prevents foe from changing Pokémon or escaping |
Shed Skin | Gives a Pokémon a 30% chance of curing its status condition every turn |
Shell Armor | Prevents Pokémon from receiving critical hits |
Shield Dust | Shields Pokémon from additional effects of moves |
Soundproof | Guards Pokémon against sound based moves |
Speed Boost | Increases Pokémon's speed every turn |
Static | Afflicts opponent Pokémon with paralasis 30% of the time when it is attacked directly Makes wild Electric type Pokémon more common |
Stench | Decreases chance of meeting wild Pokémon when Pokémon is in the lead position |
Sticky Hold | Prevents opponent Pokémon from stealing item Makes Pokémon easier to catch when fishing |
Sturdy | Shields Pokémon from one hit knock out attacks |
Suction Cups | Prevents Pokémon from swapping out when the opponent uses Whirlwind or Roar Makes Pokémon easier to catch when fishing |
Swarm | Multiplies power of Bug type attacks by 1.5 when its HP falls below 1/3 the maximum Increases the number of wild Pokémon roars heard |
Swift Swim | Doubles Pokémon's speed in rain |
Synchronize | Causes opponent Pokémon that inflicts a Poison, Paralyze, or Burn condition to receive the same condition Makes wild Pokémon with the same nature as the Synchronize Pokémon more common |
Thick Fat | Reduces damage of Fire or Ice type attacks by half |
Torrent | Multiplies power of Water type attacks by 1.5 when its HP falls below 1/3 the maximum |
Trace | Duplicates ability that opponent Pokémon has |
Truant | Causes Pokémon to attack only every other turn |
Vital Spirit | Prevents Pokémon from falling asleep Makes high level wild Pokémon more common |
Volt Absorb | Restores Pokémon's HP when it is hit with an Electric attack |
Water Veil | Prevents Pokémon from getting a Burn condition |
White Smoke | Prevents opponent's attacks from reducing stats Makes wild Pokémon less common |
Wonder Guard | Prevents all damage except from super effective hits |
