Berries were first introduced in GSC, but the Ruby and Sapphire edition of berries has been greatly revamped. Some berries can heal your Pokémon, some are used in contests, and some can raise certain stats temporarily.
Berries in the Advanced generation grow on trees. Each tree can have around 2 or 3 berries, depending on the berry and how the tree was raised. Once you pick the berries, the tree dies, and you can replant berries in the soft ground. Once you have a Wailmer Pail, you can water the berries to sometimes get more berries off the tree.
Berry | Name | Effect | Flavors |
---|---|---|---|
Cheri Berry | Heals Paralysis | Spicy | |
Cheri, Chesto, Pecha, Rawst, and Aspear berries are free alternatives to items such as Awakening, Antidote, Full Heal, etc. They're nice to have and quick to grow, but Full Heals aren't that expensive. It's your choice if you want to spend the time or spend the money. | |||
Chesto Berry | Heals Sleep | Dry | |
See Cheri Berry. The Chesto Berry is also very useful as a held item for a Pokémon with the move Rest; the Pokémon can heal completely and will not be asleep the next turn. | |||
Pecha Berry | Heals Poison | Sweet | |
See Cheri Berry. | |||
Rawst Berry | Heals Burns | Bitter | |
See Cheri Berry. | |||
Aspear Berry | Heals Freezing | Sour | |
See Cheri Berry. | |||
Leppa Berry | Restores 10 PP when it's zero | Sweet, Spicy, Sour, Bitter | |
Leppa berries are a must to stock up on - Ethers and Elixirs, which also restore PP, cannot be bought anywhere in the game, so if you have a large stock of Leppa berries, you don't have to worry about running out of Ethers or Elixirs. (Elixirs are still nice for during battles though; they save time by healing all four moves at once.) | |||
Oran Berry | Restores 10 HP when it's half or lower | Dry, Sweet, Spicy, Sour, Bitter | |
Oran berries grow very quickly and are easy to stock up on if you keep planting them, but Sitrus berries are a better time investment - see Sitrus berries. | |||
Persim Berry | Cures Confusion | Dry, Sweet, Spicy, Sour, Bitter | |
Useful because there aren't many items that heal Confusion. It can make a nice held item for a Pokémon with a move such as Thrash which causes Confusion in the user. If you have a Yellow Flute, though, then the Persim Berry is only useful as a held item. | |||
Lum Berry | Cures any status condition | Dry, Sweet, Spicy, Sour, Bitter | |
The Lum Berry is a free alternative to Full Heal or Lava Cookies. While the "free" part is nice, Lum berries take a very long time to grow and often the plants only produce one berry, making it hard to accumulate a lot of them. Unless you have a lot of time, Full Heals or Lava Cookies are a better choice, and if you have enough time to grow a ton of Lum berries, you might as well spend it battling trainers for money. | |||
Sitrus Berry | Restores 30 HP when it's half or lower | Dry, Sweet, Spicy, Sour, Bitter | |
Sitrus berries make a very nice Hold Item for a Pokémon because your Pokémon can use them themselves. It may not be a lot of hit points, but you won't use up any turns. They are also nice outside of battle, especially between Elite Four battles - it takes time to grow and use them all, but it's free and it saves your stronger healing items for during battles. | |||
