Gym 1) Roxanne

Roxanne has two Pokémon, Geodude, a Rock/Ground type and Nosepass, a Rock type. Ruby and Sapphire seem to mimic RBY in that their first gym is focused on Rock and Ground Pokémon. If you chose Mudkip or Treecko as your starter, this gym should be fairly easy. However, if you chose Torchic, you should raise a Ralts or a Beautifly and use Psychic attacks. A Fighting type Pokémon works well here, too. Your reward for winning is the Stone Badge and TM 42, Rock Tomb. The Stone Badge raises your Pokémon's attack and allows you to use Cut outside of battle.
Gym 2) Brawly

Brawly uses Fighting type Pokémon. Flying and Psychic types will do well here, but Normal types will quickly be taken down. Brawly's gym is filled with darkness, and only a small area around you is visible at first. As you defeat trainers, more will become visible. If you defeat Brawly, you will receive TM 8, Bulk Up, and the Knuckle Badge. The Knuckle Badge lets you use Flash outside of battle. Additionally, any Pokémon up to level 30 will obey you.

Wattson is a trainer of Electric types. Water and Flying Pokémon don't stand a chance in this gym, but Ground types will work nicely, as Electric attacks don't affect them. However, beware of Voltorb, as it learns few Electric attacks and more Normal ones. This gym has a series of electric doors, and in order to get through, you have to step on the correct sequences of switches. Don't worry, the doors can't shock you (only the trainers!) If you win the gym battle, you will be rewarded with TM
